This episode was so shocking. It seems as though everyone was wrong, but at the same time no one was wrong, and I am excited to share my thoughts.
****Spoilers Ahead*****
Brave 101: Emma needs Rumple to be brave, and pull Excalibur from the stone. She uses Merida to toughen him up, but Merida cannot seem to do that. It is almost as though Rumple has learned nothing in his eternity as the dark one. He is back to being his average cowardly self. This was so strange to me because he has been without his dark power multiple times before. When Belle banished him, he still acted as dark as ever. I guess you can still make the case that he was still the dark one without his powers....so maybe this is the real Rumple, but I am curious as to what Merida plans to do with Belle? How will she make Rumple a hero?
Dark Swan: We learned in this episode that Emma is a quick learner. She and Regina work together to free Merlin. Emma learns that Merlin wept before becoming a tree, they decide to use a tear of heartbreak to free Merlin. Emma enchants a dream catcher to show Regina the moment when her mother killed Daniel. This causes Regina to cry and Emma wonders how a parent could do such a thing. They try to use the tear, but the pain wasn't strong enough, Regina had moved on. Emma knew this wouldn't work, so she ripped out Violet's heart, and forced her to break Henry's heart. The pain inside of Henry's tear allows the spell to work freeing Merlin. Surprise, Surprise, we have already met Merlin( "The Dark Swan"). He opened up the season, by warning young Emma to not pull Excalibur from its stone. Still not sure what that means, I mean come on we know Emma cannot pull it from the stone( "The Price").
Present Day: Violet's horse goes missing and Henry insists on Emma's help in the safe return. Emma agrees and helps, this causes Violet to be extremely grateful to Henry. Unfortunately, her efforts to keep her son and power were done in vain. Regina and the heroes invade her home, once they believe Emma is keeping Rumple hostage. They uncover Excalibur in her basement as well as a dream catcher. Henry isn't to thrilled when he discovers that the dream catcher is full of Violets memories. The most disturbing is the one of Emma ripping her heart out, in order to break Henry's. This causes resentment between Regina and Emma, as well as Henry and Emma. Sorry Emma, but a horse can't fix a broken heart. That was just wrong.
Two faced/Two realities: I can't believe Violet's Dad. He is very confusing, in his own realm he sees Henry as weak and pathetic, but Henry is only 13. If I remember correctly Baelfire was only 14 and he had no problem with the ladies(well aside from the fact that they were all afraid of his father....well the lady I am referring to is Morraine from "The Return"). Anyway, in Storybrooke he seems to really like Henry which I feel is very strange. He just seems like he feels whatever suits him, most characters don't switch qualities but he did.
Where did you go: So Arthur was pretty irrelevant this episode, I mean he gave us a brief look into the power of Excalibur, but are we able to trust him in this realm? I mean he just killed his subject. So far(In storybrooke) we have not been given any real reason to lose our trust in him. I really wonder why Emma brought Arthur, knowing everything that he did in Camelot, to Storybrooke. She knows how dangerous he is, and how easily her family put their trust in him, but she still brought him anyway.
Tune in Next Sunday, November 1, 2015 "The Bear and The Bow"
